I just love the occasional Andhra meal, and Palak Dal is one of the items that’s a part of every one of them. After some trials, I finally managed to come close enough to the original recipe. It’s a delicious dish and goes very well with rice (which I prefer) or rotis.

Ingredients
  • 1 cup Chana Dal, washed
  • 3 cups water
  • ½ tsp Turmeric
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 bunch Spinach, chopped
  • 4-5 cloves Garlic, chopped
  • 1 Onion, chopped
  • 1 Tomato, chopped
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • 3-4 Green Chillies, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Lemon Juice
  • 2 tsp Coriander Powder
  • ½ tsp Garam Masala
  • ½ tsp Chilli Powder
  • Coriander leaves, to garnish

    Method
    1. Pressure cook the dal in the 3 cups of water with turmeric and salt for 20 minutes.
    2. Once the steam settles down completely, open the cooker lid.
    3. Add the spinach and cook until the spinach is tender and mix with the lentils - about 30-35 minutes.
    4. In a separate pan heat the oil, add the cumin seeds and once they splutter, add the onions and fry till lightly browned
    5. Add the garlic, tomatoes, green chilli, coriander powder, garam masala, red chili powder and fry for 2 minutes.
    6. Add the dal and spinach and lemon juice, stir and heat through.

Garnish with fresh, chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with chapatti or basmati rice.
