Long Term Skill Shortage List
IT jobs on the Skill Shortage List in New Zealand as on 31st November 2007 are

Systems Analyst, Computer application Engineer, Systems Manager, Management & Project Management staff, Policy planning & Research staff, Systems Development staff, Technical advice and Consultancy staff, Senior Test Analyst, Programmer, Solutions Architect.

Qualification Required
Degree level (Bachelor’s degrees and graduate diplomas) qualification majoring in computer science, information science or information technology (electronics, or engineering for testers) and three years of relevant work experience subjet to conditions.

Work temporarily in New Zealand

–> Temporary work / Work Permit
Temporary work visas and permits are granted to people who have a job offer from a New Zealand employer, people skilled in occupations that are in Immediate Skill Shortage List, people who want to gain work experience or work after studying in New Zealand and people who want to join their partner in New Zealand and work. This is the fastest way to work in New Zealand. Temporary Work permits are granted to workers from overseas to meet particular or seasonal worker shortages that cannot be met from within New Zealand. This New Zealand work experience could later count towards points under the skilled migrant category. For more information refer here.

Note: You do not need a work visa or permit to work in New Zealand if you are an Australian citizen, or an Australian resident with a current permanent residence visa or a current resident return visa. For more refer here.

Work and live permanently in New Zealand

Your road to permanent residency. Working temporarily in New Zealand can be used as a step towards gaining residence and settling there permanently.

–> Work to Residence
The Work to Residence category allows you to get a temporary work visa and/or permit as a step towards gaining permanent residence. Applicants for a New Zealand work permit under the Work to Residence categories may be qualified in occupations that are in demand in New Zealand.

There are 3 main policies under this category

* You have a job offer from a New Zealand employer

If you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer, the policy that you apply under depends on whether your occupation is on Long Term Skill Shortage List.

* Your occupation is on the Long Term Skill Shortage List

If your occupation is on the Long Term Skill Shortage list, you may be eligible to apply under our Long Term Skill Shortage List Work Policy, for people with skills we have identified this country needs. See the requirements for this policy.

* Your occupation is NOT on the Long Term Skill Shortage List

If you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer but your occupation is not on the Long Term Skill Shortage List, you may be able to apply under Talent (Accredited Employers) Work Policy. This policy is for people who have job offers from employers who we have accredited to recruit staff from overseas. See the requirements for this policy.

Note: You do not need a visa or permit to work in New Zealand if you are an Australian citizen, or an Australian resident with a current permanent residence visa or a current resident return visa.

–> Residence from Work
The Residence from Work category is for people who are already in New Zealand on a Work to Residence permit, and want to apply for residence. If you have been working in New Zealand for at least two years after being granted a work visa and/or permit under the Work to Residence category and your occupation is on the Long Term Skill Shortage List and < 56 years of age and earning >= $NZ45,000 then you can apply for residence under Residence from Work category.

* Your occupation is NOT on the Long Term Skill Shortage List

If you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer but your occupation is not on the Long Term Skill Shortage List, you may be able to apply under Talent (Accredited Employers) Work Policy. This policy is for people who have job offers from employers who we have accredited to recruit staff from overseas. See the requirements for this policy. For more information see this link.

–> Employee of a Relocating Company
If you are a key employee of a business that is relocating its operations to New Zealand, you can apply for a work permit and later a residence permit under our Employee of a Relocating Company category.

–> Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)
The Skilled Migrant Category is for people who have the skills, qualifications and experience and who want to live and work permanently in New Zealand. If you’ve got the skills specified in the Long Term Skill Shortage List and want to make New Zealand your long-term destination, but does NOT have a offer from any New Zealand company, Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) offers you the opportunity to move to New Zealand to work and live permanently. To qualify for this you have to meet the The Skilled Migrant Category Points Indicator criteria of 100 points and you need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). To check your points click HERE.

Qualification - 10 points
Work experience 2-5 years - 10 points
Work experience 6+ years - 15 points
NZ Work experience 1 year - 5 points
NZ Work experience 2 year - 10 points
NZ Work experience 3 > year - 15 points
Applicant’s partner having a recognised qualification - 20 points
Applicant’s partner having an offer of skilled employment in New Zealand (or current skilled employment) - 20 points

Skilled Migrant Category fortnightly selection: Each fortnight Immigration New Zealand selects Expressions of Interest (EOIs) under the Skilled Migrant Category.

New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA)

The New Zealand Qualifications Authority is the government agency responsible for quality assurance of qualifications. NZQA assess your international qualification if it does not align with those listed on List of Recognised Qualifications. NZQA’s check focuses on the qualification and the institution that has awarded it.

Information Technology Association of New Zealand (ITANZ)

The Information Technology Association of New Zealand (ITANZ) issues the letter of support by confirming that your skills are in short supply in New Zealand is required to.
